Before you invest time, energy, and money on your one-of-a-kind project, we recommend the following:
- Check the construction company's background, certifications and credentials: Make sure the company you choose has extensive experience in residential construction, up-to-date certifications, and adheres to high-quality standards set forth by the Better Business Bureau, The Uniformed Building Code, International Residential Code, and The International Code Council.
- Request references: It's good practice to talk to previous customers about their experience working with the company.
- Review a portfolio of past projects: Ask specific questions about past projects to make sure construction will take place according to your vision. Remember, it's your dream-space.
- Ask about options and features: If you're unsure about what you want, the company should be able to guide you. Also, request a full description of the proposed project, including area drawings, to ensure that your vision is interpreted correctly. Remember, it's easier and less costly to make changes before construction begins.
- Review costs: Make sure it's clear what's included in the price. For example, does the price include weather treatment of the wood?
- Ask about warranties and guarantees: Find out what guarantees and warranties are available and how long they last. It's good if a company stands by their work and will be there for you long after the project is completed to answer questions, resolve problems, or help you with your next project.
